Overview

Within the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, Karuma Wildlife Reserve is situated in Kiryandongo District, western Uganda. It is roughly 675-820 square kilometers in size and is close to Budongo Forest Reserve, Bugungu Wildlife Reserve, and Murchison Falls National Park. It was first created in 1964 as a regulated hunting area in 1962 with the intention of serving as a buffer between the nearby settlements and Murchison Falls National Park. The reserve is well-known for the thundering Karuma Falls on the Victoria Nile, which get its name from a local myth that attributes the rock formations of the falls to a spirit known as "Karuma."
