KIBIRA NATIONAL PARK

KIBIRA NATIONAL PARK

One of the vast and unexplored rain forests in Burundi is Kibira National Park, which spans 40,000 hectares. Once a holy hunting area for the Burundian kings, it now supports some 200 species of birds, 98 mammal species, and 12 primates, including many families of chimpanzees, baboons, red-tailed monkeys, and black colobus.

Kibira National Park's size.

In the northwest of Burundi is a national park called Kibira. Kibira National Park is located on top of the Congo-Nile Divide mountains, spanning 400 km² and overlapping four provinces.

Location: Kibira National Park is an extension of Rwanda's Nyungwe Forest National Park, which serves as a refuge for certain chimpanzees that are threatened by habitat loss. It is situated in northwest Burundi and south of Rwanda.

Activities

There is still a lot of unexplored wildlife and bird habitat here, making it the ideal place to highlight Burundi's tourism potential. Bird watching is also very profitable in the forest.

Trekking chimpanzees

In addition to having excellent chances of sighting other primates including baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and even duickers, trekking chimpanzees in the nation's dense forest cover is less popular with tourists.

Walks of Primates

Along the forest edge, you may also go on walks to observe different monkey species. There are amazing views of these animals, and you can take pictures while you're there. Common species include the L'hoest monkey and the black and white colobus monkey.

Walks in forests

Walks in the forest are very unique because of the remarkable rivers, and there's a sense of authenticity and untamed sounds in the dense lowland forest.

Pygmy's visits

Customers can also travel to the Pygmy villages and share their customs with the formerly forest-dwellers. Although they have been greatly impacted by the growing development, they are happy to offer their way of life.

Walks on tea plantations

In addition to sharing the experience of tea extraction and how it has impacted the likelihood of the people living close to the Kibira Forest National Park, guided hikes can be organised to view the numerous tea farms.

Safaris for Birdwatching in Burundi

Organising a birding safari trip to Burundi to see the several bird species that are advised to be seen at Kibira National Park, after making a reservation with a reputable Burundian safari firm. The great blue turaco, mountain buzzard, white-spotted fluff-tail grey parrot, bar-tailed trogon, and black-and-white-squeaked horn bill are among the 200 bird species that make birdwatching one of the most popular activities.

How to Travel to National Park Kibira

Kibira National Park can be reached by car from Kigali, the city of Rwanda, or Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi.

From Bujumbura

It will take roughly two hours to drive from Bujumbura to northwest Burundi, covering about 70 kilometres on reasonably accessible roads.

From Kigali

You will need to pass the border from Rwanda to Burundi during the remarkable 6-hour drive from Kigali, Rwanda, which covers a distance of roughly 220 kilometres.

Visit Kibira National Park at its Best Time.

The brief wet season, which runs from September to November, and the short dry season, which runs from December to January, are the best times to visit Kibira National Park if you wish to follow chimpanzees in Burundi. It serves as a substitute for Rusizi National Park as a tourist destination.

Hotel Club Du Lac Tanganyika accommodations:

The Hotel Club Du Lac Tanganyika is a beachfront hotel in Bujumbura that is connected to the airport and near Saga beach. It provides lodging for tourists from all over the world.

Additionally, the U.S. Embassy and Prince Louis Rwagasore Stadium are around 6 miles (10 km) apart, as are Bujumbura Central Market and Musee Vivant.
