ACTIVITIES AT LAKE VICTORIA IN UGANDA

Lake Victoria is the largest freshwater Lake in Africa. It got its name from the Lake Queen of England Her Majesty Queen Victoria and before its naming, the lake was known as Lake Nalubale by the locals, but after the explorer John Hanning Speke seeing how stunning and good looking the Lake was, he changed its name to Lake Victoria in the year 1858. The whole area of Lake Victoria is almost 68.800 square kilometers. Lake Victoria spreads widely throughout more than four districts in Uganda including Entebbe, Jinja, Kampala, and Masaka. The presence of Lake Victoria has greatly benefited Uganda's tourism and economic sectors.

ACTIVITIES THAT TAKE PLACE AT LAKE VICTORIA INCLUDE:
Boat Cruises

Enjoy the beautiful views of the water and the surrounding scenery while taking a leisurely boat tour around the Lake. A boat cruise on Lake Victoria is something one should not miss a visit. Early morning excursions are particularly rewarding as you can see birds in their natural habitat. The elusive shoebill stork can be spotted in Mabamba Swamp.

Ngamba island Chimpanzee Sanctuary:

This sanctuary is home for 49 orphaned and rescued chimpanzees, taken away from illegal pet traders and bush meat hunters. Although they went through some tough times, the chimpanzees at Ngamba have a safe and semi natural environment in which to recover and eventually thrive over their long lives of up to 60 years. The island spans 95 acres of lush forest where the chimps can roam freely and search for food each day. Tourists visiting the sanctuary can watch feeding sessions from a special viewing platform which the chimps, of course love. The chimps also have the freedom to stay in the forest at night or return to nighttime enclosures where they can build nests and receive an evening meal. Taking a trip to Ngamba Island promises a wonderful experience of seeing these incredible animals in their natural habitat on Lake Victoria.

Ssese Islands

Entebbe botanical gardens
