FACTS ABOUT NGAMBA ISLAND CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY:

Nestled in the serene waters of Lake Victoria, approximately 23 kilometers southeast of Entebbe, Uganda, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary stands as a beacon of hope for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees. Spanning 100 acres, with 95% covered in lush forest, the sanctuary offers a sanctuary for over 50 chimpanzees, providing them with a safe haven to thrive in a semi-wild environment. 

OVERVIEW

Established in 1998 by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust, Ngamba Island serves as a refuge for chimpanzees rescued from poaching, illegal pet trade, and other human-induced threats. The sanctuary is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, ensuring high standards of animal care and welfare. 

The island's forested terrain provides a natural habitat where chimpanzees can exhibit their natural behaviors, such as foraging, nesting, and socializing. Visitors to the sanctuary have the unique opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures up close, contributing to their conservation and well-being.

ACTIVITIES AT NGAMBA ISLAND

CHIMPANZEE VIEWING AND FEEDING:

Guests can participate in scheduled chimpanzee feedings, observing the chimps from a safe distance. During these sessions, visitors can witness the chimpanzees' social interactions and feeding behaviors. In some cases, visitors may have the opportunity to assist in feeding the chimps, providing a hands-on conservation experience.

Ngamba Island is home to over 150 bird species, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts. The surrounding waters and forested areas also host various wildlife, including monitor lizards and diverse plant species, offering ample opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

A unique feature of Ngamba Island is its location straddling the equator. Visitors can take a refreshing dip in Lake Victoria while floating across this imaginary line, experiencing the sensation of being in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres simultaneously.
