LAKE NKURUBA RESERVE

Lake Nkuruba reserve is renowned for its volcanic crater lake and verdant forest environment. The lake is surrounded by the incredible breathtaking gorgeous kibale forest national park and Rwenzori Mountain ranges.

Lake Nkuruba reserve is a hidden gem in Uganda that is uncommonly precious, concealed and undiscovered treasure in Uganda and East Africa at large. The beauty is found in nature, sucked up in the surrounding forest is the stunning ancient crater known as Lake Nkuruba Reserve. Within the naturally occurring woodland gem reserve lies a crater lake called Lake Nkuruba though the main issue here is deforestation, the location promotes wildlife breeding.

A variety of bird and primate species can be found in lake Nkuruba Nature reserve which is rich in biodiversity such as black and white colobus monkeys, endangered Uganda red colobus, the Great Blue Turaco and many others.

Attractions and activities at Lake Nkuruba reserve

Lake Nkuruba

Lake Nkuruba is a volcanic crater lake that is a focal point of the reserve. The lake itself is a serene and lovely place where you can unwind, enjoy the view and even go for swimming. Lake Nkuruba is located just 25km south of the great town of Fort Portal in western Uganda situated in the stunning landscapes of Rwenzori mountains and Kibale National Park. And don’t forget that Lake Nkuruba has different species of birds recorded.

Bird watching

Lake Nkuruba reserve with its abundant birdlife, makes it a fantastic place for bird watchers to visit and spot different bird species such as the Great Blue Turaco and the black and white casqued Hornbill.

Observing primates

Lake Nkuruba reserve is a home to a variety of primates including the critically endangered Uganda red colobus, black and white colobus monkeys and can be found around lake Nkuruba. These primates are frequently seen by the visitors in their natural environment offering fantastic chances for wildlife photography.

Chimpanzee Trekking

Though there is no chimpanzee trekking in lake Nkuruba reserve, it is a hard starting point for those who want to walk with the primates in the neighboring kibale National Park which is well known for having large chimpanzee population.

Hiking

Lake Nkuruba reserve provides a range of hiking experience, such as climbing to picturesque overlooks like at the Top of the World exploring the nearby wooded areas and visiting waterfalls like Mahoma waterfalls, there are also Rwenzori mountains in the vicinity.

Camping

Lake Nkuruba reserve offers camping experience if you like to camp. You can set up camp beneath trees that are often visited by monkeys which makes it the interesting and engaging camping experience.

Nature walk

Nature walks at lake Nkuruba reserve will give you advantage of the guided walks that the reserve’s tour guides provide. These walks also offer educational and entertaining experiences as they take you through the forest, vistas and other local sights.

Interaction with the community

Interaction with the community in Lake Nkuruba reserve will make you to interact with the community people in the area about their customs by getting involved. Supporting the community and gaining insight into local culture can be achieved in Rwaihamba village market.

Cultural dance performance

The group performs in the grounds of nature reserve which will make you to enjoy the cultural dance performances from the talented Nkuruba Development Youth Group. These perform for the guests every Saturday and Sunday.

Traditional crafts of Uganda

There is a very beautiful Ugandan hand crafts for sale which have been made by local women, this means that your purchase helps to support the local community.

Exploring Rwaihamba market

Rwaihamba market is one of the adventure markets in Uganda located 2km from the Nature reserve. During weekly days sells lots of quality foods, drinks, clothes and local crafts.

Bicycle tours
