Lake bunyonyi a fresh water lake in the south western parts of Uganda. The depth of the lake is expected to vary between 44m(144ft) and 900m(2952ft) which if true, makes it the second deepest lake in Africa. The altitude of Lake bunyonyi is 1950 meters above the sea level, with hills ranging from 2200 to 2478 meters high. The lake, is home of 29 islands, Many tourists and travelers who undertake a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda or come to Uganda after their Rwanda gorilla safari experience rest and relax at the beautiful lake as they enjoy the the best scenery in the world and involve themselves in various cultural and community activities as well as birding and canoe rides. The lake is also said to be a place of many small birds that is the English translation of the word ''bunyonyi''. with over 200 birds species around the lake.
some of the islands include; the punishment island, this is a small island where pregnant ladies who are not married where put to starve and be eaten by prey birds. bucuranuka island; this is an island on lake bunyonyi said to be upside down .it is said so following a history of a woman who was passing by and found two men drinking ''bushera'' the bakiga traditional drink. out of thirsty, She asked the men to give him some to drink. The Men not only denied him the drink but also chased Her then the woman cursed the island and it turned upside down leaving the two Men dead. Kahugye island; This is the island on lake bunyonyi with some wild animals like zebras, waterbuck, antelopes and many others. Bushara island; is the best destination for birds on Lake bunyonyi. Bwama island; this is where the leprosy sanctuary is located. way back in 1920s, it was a treatment center for people with leprosy. though the hospital is no more, tourists visit here to see its remains.
