KISITE MPUNGUTI MARINE NATIONAL PARK

KISITE MPUNGUTI MARINE NATIONAL PARK

KISITE MPUNGUTI MARINE NATIONAL PARK

A unique and important habitat, Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park is situated in Kenya, close to Wasini Island, off the southern coast of Mombasa. The park, which spans roughly 15 square miles and includes coral reefs and four small islands—Kisite Island and the three Mpunguti islands (Juu, Chini, and Liwe La Jahazi)—combines Kisite Marine National Park and Mpunguti Marine National Reserve. For many bird species, such as roseate terns and migratory crab plovers, these islands provide an essential breeding area. The Mpunguti Islands are characterized by their thick forest cover. Consequently, the park's biodiversity is increased. Numerous marine and terrestrial species are supported, which adds substantial environmental value.

The islands' natural beauty and distinctive habitats are protected by Kisite Marine Park. With more than 45 coral species, 360 fish species, including grouper, wrasse, pufferfish, scorpionfish, damselfish, snapper, ray, turtle, and dolphin, and migratory birds, these are home to an amazing variety of indigenous marine life. Visitors can expect to see whale sharks and humpback whales. Endangered coconut crabs can be found on Mpunguti Chini Island. The park is perfect for swimming, cooling off, and engaging in water sports because it provides a pleasant respite from the heat.

Encounters between dolphins and whales
See more than 200 dolphins in the colorful seas of Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park, including bottlenose, humpback, and spinner dolphins, as they play in the surf alone or in groups of two to twenty-five. The largest fish in the world, migratory whale sharks, glide over the ocean, and humpback whales raise their young in the warm water if you visit the park between July and December.

Kisite island
Because of its vital importance in bird population conservation, Kisite Island has been classified as an important bird area (IBA) on a worldwide scale. With flat, rocky terrain, grassy spots, and magnificent sandy beaches that are revealed at low tide, this island is unlike any other. Because Kisite Island supports pelagic-feeders, which eat the open ocean, it offers seabirds a perfect home. See the yearly cycle of the roseate and sooty terns arriving in July to breed and the birds departing in September with their young.

Caves of Shimoni slaves
A must-see destination, the ancient coral caverns of Shimoni are only a 5-minute walk from Shimoni Pier. These enormous caves, which connect to the three sisters caves and stretch 5 km inland, were used by the locals as "kayas," or places of devotion and refuge. The caves served as detention facilities for enslaved people during the 18th and 19th centuries. who were headed for Zanzibar's Arabian slave markets. With admission payments going to local teachers and underprivileged kids, the caves are operated as a communal enterprise.

The barrier reef in Kenya
The Kenyan barrier reef is a striking aspect of the country's coastline, extending from Shimoni in the south to Malindi in the north. Known as the "rainforests of the sea," this immaculate and fully grown coral reef stretches endlessly, broken only by river mouths. With about a million species calling the reef home, it is home to an amazing variety of marine life.
