A lion or a leopard may occasionally be spotted along the Kazinga Channel's banks.

One of Queen Elizabeth National Park's main tourist destinations is the Kazinga Channel. The 32-kilometer channel runs between Lake Gorge and Lake Edward. The Kazinga Channel is home to a wide range of wildlife, including mammals like crocodiles, hippos, monitor lizards, elephants, buffaloes, and birds like the blue napped mouse bird, small bee-eater, grey capped warbler, yellow backed weaver, pin-tailed whydah, slender-billed weaver, and grey-headed.

Every vehicle traveling from Mbarara to Kasese passes via Katunguru.  There are two shifts for boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel: morning and afternoon. The Sunbird, a cozy ten-seater boat, and the Kingfisher, a chic twelve-seater boat, are the options available to visitors at Mweya Safari Lodge. Both ships have knowledgeable crews and guides, but the Kingfisher offers more upscale accommodations, with sun protection canopies and refreshments. A two-hour boat excursion on the Kazinga Channel allows visitors to get up close and personal with water-loving creatures and birds.

SPECIES TO WATCH FOR ON THE BOAT CRUISE:

HIPPOS:

At night, these travel great distances to feed while remaining in the channel water.  They then hike back into the ocean before the sun rises. In order to prevent heat from penetrating their skin, hippos avoid moving in the sunlight. In order to make up for the lack of fur on their bodies, these animals have too much fat under their skin.

CROCODILES

Crocodiles are among the other creatures to watch out for on the boat trip across the Kazinga Channel. Many years ago, they were the inhabitants of the Kazinga Channel.
